Responds to Bloomberg’s statement on wanting NYC to have more billionaires
September 20, 2013 (New York, NY) – Today, Councilwoman and Public Advocate Candidate Letitia “Tish” James issued the following statement in response to Mayor Bloomberg’s comments on attracting more billionaires to New York. During his regularly scheduled radio interview, Bloomberg said: “if we could get every billionaire around the world to move here, it would be a Godsend.”
Councilwoman James’ statement:
“Today, Mayor Bloomberg gave voice to the policies he’s been pushing for the past 12 years: he wants New York to be a city of billionaires.
“This is exactly what’s wrong with the Bloomberg approach. While Mayor Bloomberg rejoices in more billionaires, I want New York City to be a place where we reduce the gap between the rich and the poor and support working-class people.
“We must move beyond Bloomberg and take New York in a new direction with progressive policies that help working families. It’s why I’ve been proud to stand up to Mayor Bloomberg in the City Council and why I’ll continue to fight policies that favor the wealthy and the well-connected, even after he’s gone.”
Councilwoman James won first place in the Democratic Primary for Public Advocate and a spot in the October 1st runoff. Yesterday, James was endorsed by coalition of women’s rights advocates including EMILY’s List, National Organization for Women (NOW-NYC), and Planned Parenthood.
